People

Along our Journey across America, I’m going to meet the people who live in our great country…the “big shots” and the “little shots.” My story will include their stories. What do they believe? Why? How do their life experiences compare to mine? What are their hopes and dreams? I want to meet a farmer. I want to chat with a lobster fisherman. I want to play checkers in front of the general store, with the old-timer siting there. I’m gonna meet a cowboy…and talk to a country singer at the Grand Ole Opry. What about an assembly line worker making cars in Detroit? A United States Senator? A Secret Service Agent? I want to visit the Pentagon and chat with an Army General. (I think my friend Michael can make this happen!) You get the idea. As I meet these folks along the way I’ll write a little about them, right here. Meeting them is as much of the Great American Adventure as visiting the places where they live. So, here are some of their stories…

Los Cerritos Mexican Kitchen, Roswell, New Mexico…

OCTOBER 7, 2014. LOS CERRITOS MEXICAN KITCHEN was our restaurant choice for dinner tonight. I don’t know if  Roswell’s Little Green Men enjoy Mexican food, but if so I bet they come here often. The food was good and the service was outstanding.  The place is casual. It’s clean as a whistle. It has the … Continue reading »

Picking blueberries at Fred and Patty’s Farm…

SEPTEMBER 7, 2014. FRESH, LOCALLY GROWN BERRIES. We took a drive in the country today and had what turned out to be one of the most interesting excursions so far on our Great American Adventure. At the side of the road on the north shore of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille, we saw a makeshift sign: … Continue reading »

Mennonites in Idaho…

SEPTEMBER 6, 2014. WHO ARE THE MENNONITES? Having seen quite a few Mennonite women in the area…everywhere from the check-out line at Walmart to walking in the woods, I realized I knew next to nothing about them or their religion. Here’s what I’ve learned. They are Christians, believing in the Trinity of Father, Son and … Continue reading »

Sandpoint’s Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center…

AUGUST 28, 2014. NEAR SANDPOINT, IDAHO. THIS IS NO ORDINARY MUSEUM. And it has nothing to do with flying animals or aviaries. Rather, the museum memorializes the life, times and accomplishments of Dr. Forrest Bird, currently 93 years of age, who personally welcomed us to the large hanger where many of the collections are displayed. … Continue reading »

We’ve made a big decision…

JULY 8, 2014. WE’RE GOING TO SLOW DOWN. Over our morning coffee during the last few days, we’ve been discussing the pace of our Journey. We’ve been talking about places we’d planned to visit that we’d need to skip, in order to get to the East Coast by Autumn. It’s dawned on us…gradually, over the … Continue reading »

Vale, Oregon…

JULY 5, 2014. VALE IS A TINY WESTERN TOWN on the extreme eastern side of Oregon, only about 15 miles from the border with Idaho. The population is less than 2,000. Rodeo is “where it’s at” in Vale and we stumbled upon this town on the final night of the annual Vale Rodeo. What luck! … Continue reading »

Bub Warren…Western saddle maker.

JULY 2, 2014. REDMOND, OREGON. This was a really special day! As most of you know, I’m taking this Journey as much to meet folks as I am to see places. Today I got to meet a really special man. Here’s how it happened: We had taken our RV to a detail shop to have … Continue reading »

Eugene, Oregon…

JUNE 28, 2014. We just arrived in Eugene, having left Washington mid-day and driving all afternoon in the rain.  We’ll be here only a day or two. We’ve specifically come to have our windshield re-set at a specialty RV Glass facility. We’re getting an extremely noisy whistling sound around the windshield.  It’s upsetting when these … Continue reading »

Happy Birthday to Florence…

MARCH 19, 2014 FLORENCE’S BIRTHDAY PARTY: It’s been very windy…too windy to do lots outside today for Florence’s birthday. Yesterday we went to the Clubhouse to mix with “the folks”… wouldn’t want to hang out there too often. So today we decided to celebrate Florence’s birthday at the Blue Water Resort and Casino for lunch. … Continue reading »

Steamin’ Stan Ruffo…

FEBRUARY 22, 2014 Our friend Stan is a very talented musician and a hell of a nice guy!  He sings, plays guitar, sax and harmonica and probably other instruments he’s not mentioned to us. We saw him last night at Hooley’s Irish Pub in San Diego and had a great time. It’s fun “being … Continue reading »

Our friends Stan and Therese…

February 21, 2014 So far during our Adventure, we’ve made some friends…some really good friends. Stan and Therese easily top the list. Back in October, when Florence and I were scrambling around town trying to wrap up our affairs before starting our “shakedown cruise” we stayed for quite a while at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park … Continue reading »

Now that’s a good steak! Dale and Dottie.

DECEMBER 15, 2013. This is another post about interesting people I’ve met along the way. As I’ve stated, one of the compelling reasons I had for taking this trip was to meet and talk to interesting Americans. I want to meet folks whose backgrounds aren’t parallel with mine. I want to learn what they think, … Continue reading »

Page Springs Resort in Sedona. Diane with her drum…

Page Springs RV Resort was the campground for our stay in the Sedona area. It turned out to be a nice place and we had a site right near Oak Creek, which runs through the campground and past the restaurant up the hill and “next door.” (I’ve got a separate post about it: “Up … Continue reading »
