After I retired from the practice of law, my wife and I lived in Deerhorn Valley, a small country community in San Diego’s back country. I became something of country boy and cowboy. It was an absolutely wonderful place to call home. The community is very small and the residents are very connected to one another. It’s about a 45 minute drive to downtown San Diego and the beaches. Our dear friend Alex worked for us on our little ranch and lived with us during the week. We had about four acres, an established Oak grove, a seasonal stream, dozens of fruit trees, about 150 rose bushes, a large greenhouse and a manicured lawn larger than a football field. Twice a week I mowed that lawn with our little tractor. Alex and I had a fertilization schedule as rigid as a golf course greenskeeper! I was so proud of how good that lawn looked!
