Portland, Oregon…

Pine trees, Japanese elms and manicured lawns at Pheasant Ridge near Portland.

PHEASANT RIDGE RV PARK. We’re in Portland for about a week before crossing the Columbia River into Washington state and driving to the Mt. St. Helens area, our next stop. Since we arrived, the stormy weather has ended and today is bright and sunny. In fact, the weather forecast calls for temps into the lower 80’s this week…almost like home. We’re treating ourselves to a stay at the Pheasant Ridge RV park in the little town of Williamsville, just outside of Portland. The park is rated something like #8 in the entire country and in some ways I can understand why. The landscaping is beyond beautiful! There are bright green manicured lawns surrounding each RV spot and the entire park is forested with mature pine trees and bright red Japanese elms. As in lots of other parts of Oregon, there are huge rhododendrons with profuse blooms everywhere…they seem to grow naturally in this climate.

Driving along the Columbia River Gorge Route toward Portland…

MAY 9, 2014.

signDRIVING WEST ON INTERSTATE 84. Today’s drive took us farther along Interstate 84 traveling West toward Portland, which is our next camping spot. The weather was dramatic…bright sun followed by driving rain, hail and very high winds…enough to keep me focused on the road! The trip along this route, however, is absolutely beautiful and I would travel it again and again. There is so much to see and there are so many little towns to visit along the way: Baker City, Rufus, The Dallas and many more.

Passing through Idaho…

MAY 7, 2014: We’re now on our way to Cavitt Creek Falls in Southern Oregon. Today we left Salt Lake City and drove to Twin Falls, Idaho. idahoTomorrow we’ll continue through Boise and then into Baker City, Oregon before we stop again for the night. There is a shorter route, but because of storms and icy mountain roads, we chose the longer, safer route. Our drive was along Interstate 84, which runs all the way from Ogden, Utah to Portland, Oregon. So far, it has been a beautiful drive. There are rolling hills on each side of a divided 4 lane “country interstate” road. Not much traffic. Bright sunshine with huge white puffy clouds set in a deep blue sky. There is snow on the hills…it’s punctuated by dark green pine trees. And then out of nowhere the sky darkens and rain pours down on us so hard it sounds as if we’re inside a snare drum! The wipers are slapping hard across the huge Greyhound-bus size windshield. I love these weather extremes. Southern California is great but let’s face it: The weather is always so good it’s boring!

Shopping at Cabela’s…

my photosMAY 3, 2014

OUTING AT CABELA’S, NEAR SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH. You’ve heard of Cabela’s, right? It’s a direct marketer and specialty retailer of hunting, fishing, camping, shooting and related outdoor recreation merchandise. I’ve been buying from their catalogs online for years, but today we visited an actual brick and mortar store. Have you ever been to one?  It’s almost like spending a day at Disneyland!

What a surprise…snow on the ground!

APRIL 28, 2014

EAST CANYON RV RESORT, NEAR MORGAN, UTAH. WE HAD SNOW LAST NIGHT. Not just flurries but real, stick-to-the-ground snow! For a born and raised Southern California boy, this is a big deal.  The only problem is… we left our awning extended overnight and it’s covered with snow.  So until we can figure out a way to remove it, or it melts, we’re not going anywhere…there’s no way to retract it! I hope it doesn’t snow any more or it might rip right off the side of our coach. That would be a pricy fix!

The view this morning from our front door…our only door for that matter.

IMG_1952

There’s a lot of snow on the patio awning. We’re not going anywhere ’til we get it off of there. We can’t retract.

We bought a turkey the other day when we drove to Park City. I think today will be a good day to put it in the oven. You know me, a little thing like living in a motor-home would never stop me from cooking a fresh turkey dinner. And then…of course, home-made turkey soup from the carcass.

Lazy days…

APRIL 26, 2014

PARK CITY, UTAH. It’s been cold and rainy for the last few days so we’ve pretty much stayed inside our rig. Today we even had some snow flurries…just enough to flock the pine tree branches and give us Southern Californians a thrill.  Because cabin fever was setting in and also because we needed groceries, today we drove to Park City…about an hour away. A nice drive…the countryside here really is beautiful…very pastoral.

Near Morgan, Utah…

APRIL 23, 2014. We stopped at AN RV dealership this morning to order some parts and discuss a few upgrades with the Service Manager.morgan We made an appointment for service at the end of the month. We’re going to spend a week out in the country.   Way out in the country!  About 45 minutes from Salt Lake, not too far from Park City…the famous ski resort, lies the little town of Morgan, Utah. Picture it…It’s a handful of farms and ranches nestled among rolling green hills and a few snow capped mountain peaks. Small town Americana. About 3,500 people call it home. I’m sure there’s a 4th of July parade running down Main Street each summer. Probably a kissing booth at the local county fair. I’d bet my bottom dollar there’s lots of good home cooking inside the little farmhouses and the lemonade is made from scratch! Folks are friendly. There’s one gas station in town, a little Texaco place with only one “island” and two pumping stations. Thankfully they had diesel fuel. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the station lot is so small and the pump island so short that our rig had to straddle the street, curb and sidewalk just so I could park close enough to pump! I totally blocked the station’s driveway…nobody else could possibly have entered while we were there filling up.

Salt Lake City, Utah…a change of plans…

Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Salt Lake LDS Temple.

APRIL 21, 2014

NEAR SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.  Our itinerary called for us to leave Bryce Canyon this morningand drive to Lake Powell for a few days, followed by visits to Canyonlands, the Arches and Monument Valley. We changed our minds. As beautiful as Bryce Canyon and the nearby national parks are…sheer cliffs, bright red rocks, hoodoos and chimneys, open vistas…we’ve already seen lots of it. We’ve been on the move. We need a little rest and recuperation. One of the beauties of our current lifestyle is the freedom to change or minds and change our plans. We’re not bound to a specific schedule or itinerary. So we’ve come to the Salt Lake City area.

Easter 2014: Exploring Bryce Canyon, Utah…

happy-easter

Easter 2014. Bryce Canyon National Park.

APRIL 20, 2014

EASTER SUNDAY. We set aside today to explore Bryce Canyon National Park. However, since it’s Easter Sunday we hoped we could also find a church service to attend. Problem is, in the little town of Cannonville where we’re camped, the only church is Mormon. Since we’re not members we can’t attend services there. Exceptions aren’t made. Here’s a true story. I have a friend who went to school at BYU. He met a girl, converted to Mormonism and married her. His own non-Mormon parents couldn’t even attend their son’s wedding in the church. Oh well, we can celebrate the resurrection on our own and rejoice in the opportunity we’ve been given to explore America in our motor-home.

Kodachrome Basin State Park, Utah…

Chimney Rock, tallest of the “pipes” of sedimentary rock at Kodachrome State Park. We visited the Park on a perfect day…bright blue sky, punctuated with puffy white clouds.

APRIL 19, 2014

DAY TRIP TO KODACHROME. Kodachrome Basin State Park is just a short drive from Cannonville, where our campground is located…part of the scenic Bryce Valley. Best known for the 67 towering sand pipes that dominate the desert landscape, this colorful park has a well-deserved reputation as a photographer’s paradise. In fact, the multi-colored monoliths nestled beneath brilliant blue skies inspired National Geographic Society photographers to nickname the area Kodachrome Flat during a 1948 photography expedition. Although the park was initially named Chimney Rock State Park in 1962, the Kodak Corporation later gave permission to use the name of its popular brand of film, and the park was officially renamed Kodachrome Basin State Park.

Exploring Escalante, Utah and beyond…

Today's road trip took us off the asphalt on Burr Trail. The trip took a bit longer than expected!

Today’s road trip took us off the asphalt on Burr Trail. The trip took a bit longer than expected…like 7 hours!

APRIL 17, 2014. I feel as if, finally, we’ve really begun our Adventure. We’re now in places neither of us has ever been in the past, doing things like off-road jeeping that typify kids in their 40’s. It’s kind of nuts and we love it.  The unfamiliarity is exciting! There are lots of organized commercial tours…some by tram, others by helicopter or jeep. We’re touring ourselves with our own Jeep. (Although I must admit it’s not beyond me to take our Jeep and follow a commercial Jeep tour. We did it a few times in Sedona and it was great.)

OUR FIRST DAY EXPLORING: Our first day exploring here was an eventful one to say the least! For starters, I set my Olympus E-5 camera on the front bumper of the Jeep as I was packing some other things for our day-trip. About a mile down the road,  I heard a thumping noise and noticed a small black object bouncing on the road behind us. Oh my God…I’d left about $5,000 worth of camera gear on the bumper! I don’t know whether any of our insurance will cover a loss like that…I rather doubt it. I’d almost feel guilty making a claim. Lesson to be learned…maybe you’ve grappled with this as well: When I put the camera on the bumper “for just a minute” a little voice on my shoulder told me that I shouldn’t do that. I ignored it. Look what happened! I’ve had similar occurrences with the “little voice” many times in the past, with similar consequences. I’m going to make it a point to start listening. Has this ever happened to you? I wonder if the problem is unique to me?

How could I forget my camera!

Oh, no! I left my camera on the Jeep’s bumper!

Burr Trail Rd turnoff

It’s pretty desolate out here!

THE SCENIC ROUTE WE FOLLOWED: We headed out today not to Bryce, but to the Escalante area. Highway 12, which leads to the area, has been designated a National Scenic byway and and also an All-American road by the Federal Highway Administration. These roads have one-of-a-kind features so exceptional that they qualify as “destinations unto themselves.”  Only a few National Scenic Byways achieve this status. So our drive today took us along one of the most unique roads in the entire United States. Pretty cool! The 124-mile route winds through the heart of Bryce Canyon Country. It took us through Dixie National Forest, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, over Boulder Mountain (summit almost 10,000 feet) and ended back at Highway 24, west of Capitol Reef National Park. The sights were fantastic…one of a kind. The road was curvy and “up and down”…fun to drive. There were bumpy unpaved 4 w/d areas which were super! We were truly in some desolate areas…completely off the beaten path and all by ourselves. The only problem was that we’d seriously mis-calculated the length of time needed to complete the drive and we didn’t get back to our rig until almost 9 pm..

Arriving at Bryce Canyon, Utah…

sign

We’ll be here about four or five days. There is lots to see in the area!

APRIL 15, 2014. We arrived at the KOA Campground near Bryce Canyon National Park this evening. It’s a nice campground…trees and grass, breathtaking red rock backdrop, a little store and laundry facilities…nice folks, happy kids. I’d give it a B+ anyway. We decided to stay six nights, as so frequently moving from one spot to the next is becoming too “choppy.”  It’s a dilemma , when you think about it. On the one hand, we’re retired and as I stated early on in this blog: “What’s the rush?” On the other hand, if we don’t keep up a certain pace, we’ll never make it across America. And that, of course, is the plan.

Parks and Recreation Areas in Southwestern Utah…

escalante-regional-map

This part of Utah has lots of National and State Parks… and other significant recreational areas. It’s an outdoorsmen’s paradise. You could spend a lifetime exploring the area. A few months earlier we’d have found heaps of snow and lots of skiers.

Zion National Park, Hurricane, Utah…

zion-national-park-map

There are five National Parks in this area of Utah…we’ll try to visit each.

APRIL 11, 2014. We drove today from Nevada to a KOA Campground in a little town called Hurricane, Utah. The population here is about 14,000. Back home in San Diego, the population is 1,500,000. In fact, more people live in San Diego than in the entire state of Utah! We love San Diego. It’s been home for more than 40 years. But we’re starting to like these little towns we’re discovering on our Journey.

Hurricane will be home for a few days while we visit Zion National Park. The KOA is adjacent to a small creek and a cobalt-blue lake dotted with bass boats and hopeful fishermen, both in their boats and on the shoreline. Hurricane and nearby St. George, (population 75,000) are both “gateways” to Zion National Park. It’s of course the main attraction in the area.

A quick stop in Las Vegas…

sunsetstation

Sunset Station is one of the “off-strip” casinos frequented by the locals. We were impressed…all the Las Vegas action without the hassle and parking nightmares on the Strip.

APRIL 7, 2014. Before heading out for some boon-docking at Lake Meade and in Utah’s national parks, I needed to stop in a real live “city” to get some computer repair work done. I also wanted to have my Addison amplifier installed in the Jeep, to upgrade the OEM system.  What better a place than Las Vegas, right? Bingo! The amp is now installed, the sound is awesome and my computer is again in tip-top shape after the geek I hired got rid of “Windows of Death.” (If you’re running Windows 8, be careful!)

“OFF-THE-STRIP ACTION.” We stayed at a nice RV park just outside the City, near some of the “off-strip casinos” frequented by the locals. One of them is the Sunset Station Hotel and Casino. I’ve heard for years that these smaller casinos compete favorably with the “biggies” on the Strip. Having stayed right in the thick of things on the Strip so many times in the past, we decided to try Sunset Station. The place is nice…not quite as “glitzy” as the MGM Grand or the others, but bright, colorful and lively. The buffet was far better than average and cost just a pittance of what’s charged at the well known spots. The gaming is the same everywhere: Lots of table games and row after row of new slots. I’m glad we went…now we have a feel for what the locals do for nightlife when they don’t want to fight the crowds.

HOWEVER, ONE LAST DRIVE DOWN THE STRIP. We probably won’t return to Las Vegas. That’s OK…we’ve been here many times and what’s in store for us…well, it’s Our Great American Adventure!

NEW FRIENDS FROM MONTANA. One of the way-cool things about this RV lifestyle is meeting all the other travelers along the way. The folks in the spot next to ours here in Las Vegas, Kay and Terry, are from Montana. After hearing them describe the scenery “back home” I’m more motivated than ever to visit that State.  Terry is a pilot and has his own plane, so if we play our cards right maybe we can coax him into giving us a ride into the “way back country.” I’m terrified of heights and the idea of flying in a small plane makes me crazy, but what the heck, this is a “bucket-list adventure” after all. I’ve heard the fishing is better in Montana than anywhere else. I’ve always wanted to learn to fly-fish…maybe Montana will be the place where that will happen! On our Adventure, almost anything is possible!
